Baby Names by Numerology Number: Find Names That Match Your Baby's Energy

Every name adds up to a number. Give each letter its value on the Pythagorean chart, add them up, and reduce the total to a single digit from 1 to 9, unless it lands on a Master Number: 11, 22 or 33. Below you will find girls' and boys' names for all twelve numbers, what each number means, and how to match a name to your baby's Life Path, the number that comes from the birth date.

How Often Each Number Shows Up

We ran every name in the NameStory database through the same calculation.

Before choosing by number, it helps to know how the numbers are spread. So we calculated the Expression number of every one of the thousands of names in our database, girls' and boys', using the same method as everywhere else on NameStory. Some numbers are a lot rarer than others, and the reason is simple arithmetic.

Striped bars are Master Numbers. Source: NameStory names database, Pythagorean Expression number of each first name, calculated October 2026.

14.8%

of names reduce to a Master Number, about one in 7.

3.6%

of names are a 2, the rarest single digit by far.

5.2%

of boys' names are a 22, against 3.6% of girls' names.

Why is 2 so rare? A name whose letters add up to 29, 38 or 47 is on its way to a 2, but it passes through 11 first, and a Master Number is never reduced. So most would-be 2s end up as 11s. Count the 2s and 11s together and the family covers 10.8% of names, right in line with the other numbers. The same thing happens to 4, which loses names to 22, and to 6, which loses some to 33.

The most common number is 7, at 11.5%. Apart from 2, 4 and 6, the single digits sit close together, between 10.7% and 11.5%, and even the rarest number still holds plenty of good names. Girls' names land on 11 a little more often (7.7% against 6.6% for boys), while boys' names lead on 22.

How a Name Becomes a Number

Two examples, one ordinary and one Master Number.

The Pythagorean chart gives A the value 1, B 2, and so on up to I at 9, then starts again: J is 1, K is 2, and S is 1 once more. Add the values of every letter in the name, then add the digits of the total until one digit is left. The only exception is a total that reaches 11, 22 or 33 along the way. Those stop there. For the full method, see our numerology guide or the longer explainer, what is numerology for baby names.

29 would reduce to 2, but it passes through 11 first, so Aurora is a Master Number 11: The Intuitive.

Aurora shows why Master Numbers feel special to the parents who find them: the same total that could have made an ordinary 2 stops at 11 instead. If Aurora is on your list, see Aurora's full cosmic report to find out how that 11 lines up with your child's birth date, whether they are on the way or already here.

Start With Your Baby's Life Path

The name number is half the picture. The birth date is the other half.

Your baby's Life Path number comes from the full birth date: add every digit of the month, day and year, and reduce the same way as a name. If your baby is not here yet, the due date gives you a good first look. Pick a date below to see the Life Path and jump straight to the names that share it. Our guide to Life Path numbers goes deeper on what each one means.

Birth date or due date

Pick a date to see the Life Path number and jump to the names that share it.

Some parents look for a name that shares the Life Path number, so the name echoes the birth date. Others prefer a different number that rounds it out. Both are long-standing approaches, and neither is a rule. How well two specific numbers sit together is more nuanced, and it is what the NameStory harmony score works out, using a proprietary method that reads the full birth date alongside the name.

Due in 2027? A quirk of the calendar

We ran every date of 2026 and 2027 through the Life Path calculation. The digits of 2027 add up to 11, so an 11 needs a month and day whose digits add up to exactly 18. Only 6 dates in 2027 manage it: July 29, August 19, August 28, September 9, September 18 and September 27. 2026 had just 3 (August 29, September 19 and September 28), so a baby born on one of those days is in rare company.

Life Path 22 goes the other way: 32 days in 2026 and 36 in 2027, while plain 4 shrinks to 10 and 5 days. And no date in either year can reach 33, because the digits of a month and day never add up to enough.

Baby Names for Numbers 1 to 9

Girls' and boys' names for each single digit, with what the number stands for.

Each number has a ruling planet in NameStory's system, and each planet page lists many more names that carry it. Every name below links to its own page, with its meaning, origin and full numerology. To browse everything, start with our baby names directory.

Ruled by Moon | 3.6% of our names

Twos are the gentle diplomats: tuned in to other people, patient and cooperative. They notice how everyone in the room is feeling, often before anyone says a word.

Ruled by Jupiter | 11.0% of our names

Threes are expressive and sociable, linked to words, art and play. A 3 name is read as warm, chatty and imaginative, with a talent for lifting the mood.

8

Number 8: The Powerhouse

Ruled by Saturn | 10.7% of our names

Eights are ambitious and capable, linked to achievement, good judgment and natural authority. An 8 tends to set big goals and then get organized about reaching them.

Nines are generous idealists, compassionate and big-picture. As the last single digit, 9 is traditionally tied to completion, wisdom and care for the wider world.

Baby Names for Master Numbers 11, 22 and 33

Amplified versions of 2, 4 and 6, never reduced further.

Master Numbers carry the energy of their root number, turned up high. That makes them a favorite with some parents and a little too intense for others. Together they cover 14.8% of the names in our database, so there is plenty of choice if one appeals to you.

11

Master Number 11: The Intuitive

Ruled by Neptune | 7.2% of our names

The first Master Number, a 2 turned up high. Sensitive, perceptive and often inspiring to others, an 11 carries a strong intuitive streak.

22

Master Number 22: The Master Builder

Ruled by Pluto | 4.3% of our names

A 4 with a far bigger vision. Practical and ambitious at the same time, 22 is the number of someone who turns large ideas into real, lasting things.

33

Master Number 33: The Master Teacher

Ruled by Venus | 3.2% of our names

The rarest of the three Master Numbers: the caring energy of a 6, amplified. It is linked to teaching, healing and looking after many people at once.

One Letter Can Change the Number

Same sound, different spelling, sometimes a different number.

Numerology reads letters, not sounds. Add an H or a T and the total moves, sometimes onto a Master Number. Change two letters and it can land right back where it started.

Nora is a 3, while Norah lands on Master Number 11. Elliot and Elliott are a 1 and a 3. Sofia and Sophia look like the biggest change of the four, with an F swapped for PH, yet both arrive at 5. If you are torn between two spellings you genuinely like, the number is a fair tie-breaker.

How to Use Numbers When Choosing a Name

A few practical rules of thumb.

1

Start with the names you love, then look at the numbers

A number is a lens, not a shortlist. Every number above has plenty of beautiful names in it, so let sound, meaning and family come first, and use the number to learn something new about the names already on your list.

2

Remember the full name has its own number

The numbers on this page are for first names. A full name is read part by part: each name is reduced on its own, then the results are added and reduced again. A middle name can therefore shift the total, which makes it a gentle way to bring in a number you like. Our middle name guide covers the rest of what makes a pairing work.

3

Do not respell a name just to change its number

As the pairs above show, one letter can move a name to a different number. That is a nice bonus when you already like both spellings. It is a poor reason to give your child a spelling they will correct for the rest of their life.

4

Treat Master Numbers as intensity, not a ranking

An 11, 22 or 33 is not a better result than a 1 or a 6. It carries the same energy as its root number, turned up. Some families love that, and others would rather keep things calm.

5

Look at the pairing, not the number alone

A name number on its own tells you about the name. What most parents really want to know is how it sits with their child. Try any name with your baby's birth date or due date to see the two side by side, for free.
