Name origins
Most Arabic names are plain words with a clear meaning: light, night, generous, alive. Below are twenty of them, girls' and boys', with what each one means and its numerology number. There is also a catch no other name list mentions. Arabic has no single English spelling, and in numerology the spelling changes the number.
The same Arabic name, spelled the ways it appears in English.
Arabic is written in its own script, and short vowels are usually left out. English spellings are therefore a best guess at the sound, and families use different guesses. Numerology adds up the letters you actually write, so each guess is a different sum. We took 8 widely used names and ran every common spelling through the Pythagorean calculation. 8 of the 8 names change number depending on the spelling.

Pythagorean Expression numbers, Master Numbers kept, calculated with the NameStory numerology engine in October 2026.
The widest spread is Muhammad: its 4 spellings land on 4 different numbers, from 1 to 11. Layla is just as striking. Layla is a 6, Laila is a 8, Leila is a 3, Lailah is a 7. That is one name and one meaning, read as 4 different personalities.
The practical rule is simple. Pick the spelling your family will actually write on the birth certificate, then look up the number. Do not change a spelling to chase a number. See our full guide to baby names by numerology number for what each number means.

Layla, letter by letter.
Each letter has a value from 1 to 9 on the Pythagorean chart. Add them, then reduce the total to one digit unless it reaches 11, 22 or 33. Swap one vowel, as in Leila, and the total changes. For the full method, read what is numerology for baby names.
Four things worth settling before the paperwork.
Sounds such as the throaty kh and gh, or the Arabic q, are easy to drop in English. Decide how you want it pronounced, and teach it early.
A name can have a classical meaning, a religious association and a family story. They do not always match, and the family version is the one your child will hear.
Muhammad alone has several common spellings. Choose one, use it everywhere, and the number on this page will stay true.
Treat the number as a lens on a name you already love, not a shortlist. Every number has beautiful names in it.
